Feel proud to share the info that our beloved Comdt (JG) ABDUS SADEK ALI, Roll 1878/Tg; had been nominated to be awarded TATRAKSHAK MEDAL (GALLANTRY) during the Independence day (15th-Aug-2017) celebration day at Delhi, however, he shall be receiving it at a later date as he is located in Singapore now. He has been posted in Singapore, on prestigious deputation at Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia.
This gallantry award is for the act of fire fighting operation of MSC Daniela off Colombo on 04/05 Apr 2017. The container vessel laden with 3500 containers carrying dangerous cargo was under fire south of Sri Lanka while on its passage to Egypt. The vessel sought assistance from Sri Lanka navy. Since Sri Lanka navy does not have such capability, requested India Coast Guard ship ICGS Shoor which was on a friendly visit there then. ICGS Shoor fought the fire for 2 days continuously to control and extinguish the fire. Our brother- Sadek Ali, being the Navigating Officer of this 105 meters coast guard ship continuously manoeuvred the ship maintaining a distance of 25-30 m from Daniela for over 48 hours without any sleep or meal. Informatively, any error in manoeuvring would jeopardize safety of both ships. In this act, they saved the merchant container vessel and its 24 crews and most importantly they steered the Indo-Sri Lanka friendship to greater heights by mmediately responding to their call.
